To get to the TRUTH, about why we have so much trouble with our core development, and to get the TRUTH about how to get the progress we want, we must understand exactly what the core muscles functions are, and use movements that work the core correctly.
Doing this....will bring incredible progress to your abdominal and core development, and do wonders for your core strength, as well as improve strength in areas you may not have thought it could......
The core muscles primary functions are....stabilizing the spine during movement, rotation of the torso, and "bending" at the waist....be it either from bringing the torso down, or the legs up......
As it turns out....most of us do not get close to the development we want from our core, because we are working it backwards.....
We seem to focus and concentrate on locking the legs into position, and moving the upper body, to work our abdominal and core....and when you start thinking about natural movements, you realize, that is WRONG.....
Think about the way we move for a moment.....think about the sports you do, and the sports you have played, and the sports you have watched......in MOST athletic actions, the upper body is STABLE, while the lower body and hips move, or are moving.....
I will say it again....the UPPER BODY IS STABLE....WHILE THE LEGS AND HIPS MOVE.
If you run....legs moving, arms moving, upper body stable.....
If you play tennis.... lateral movement, explosive movement, arm movement, upper body stable (occasional leaning)....
If you play basketball.... sprinting, jumping, lateral movement, arm movement, upper body stable.....
If you play golf.....leg movement, hip movement and rotation, arm movement, upper body stable....
Playing tag with friends, running races, playing golf, playing football, playing soccer....etc...etc...etc....the UPPER BODY REMAINS MOSTLY STABLE.....held "tight" by your CORE muscles.
So, WHY....do we "lock our legs"....and move our upper body to try and develop our core ???
It would seem, by the "Occams Razor" of common sense.....that locking the UPPER BODY, and moving the hips and legs would be much, much more effective in working out, and developing core muscles.
The way to get the core development that you wish.....and get it QUICKLY, is to do the OPPOSITE of what you have been doing.
Minimize the crunches to a set-or-two....and use your lower half....
Exercises like.....
Hanging leg raises....
Plank holds...in all their many, many forms. (look them up, you will be surprised)....
"Mountain climber" push-ups.....
Hanging "bicycle".....like hanging leg raise, but move your legs like riding a bicycle.....
Lying "bicycle".....can also do this exercise on the "big ball".....
Lying "pendulum"....lie flat on back, pull legs up into a body "L" position, with legs together move them right as far as you can still keeping your back flat....then slowly back to center.....and to the left side as far as you can.....
These exercise will give you INCREDIBLE core development and strength, even if you never do a crunch again.....
It is now time to work out SMART, use your body how it was intended to be used, and the get the incredible results you DESERVE.....
NOW....go get it DONE.
I love this article...i see it all the time...crunchathons in the gym...not the solution!
